Practicing Selflessness

congruence connection forgive mindset Sep 27, 2022

Last Thursday, we launched a new HigherARC subscription service for graduates of our popular mastermind program. We will cover a topic related to our highly effective high-performance frameworks each month. At our first meeting, it seemed logical to leverage the subject of last week's post: Selflessness.

Putting others first is to be congruent with the divine. Theological considerations aside, it is simply the right thing to do for the betterment of ourselves and the world around us.

Here are nine ways to demonstrate selflessness every day.

  1.  Be Inviting - When we invite others, we are welcoming and validating. Inviting those we would not normally associate with elevates our selflessness.
  2.  Be Admitting - Understand your shortcomings. Put your house in order before you stand in judgment of others. Better yet, don't judge at all.
  3.  Be Forgiving - Sometimes, this can be quite hard. Occasionally, it is impossible, at least in the moment. Over time though, forgiveness becomes possible. Forgive yourself too, and let it go.
  4.  Be Available - Communicate the value we place on others. Take the challenge of rejecting the impulse to look at your phone while in line. Nothing screams "unavailable" more than being a walking social media-enthralled zombie.
  5.  Be Serving - Act independent of how others treat us. Serve those that don't deserve it; Serve Wide, Serve Often, Serve Deep.
  6.  Be Admiring - Praise and encourage others when the opportunity presents itself. Don't let the chance to acknowledge the good works of our fellow travelers.
  7.  Be Empathetic - Sense another person's pain, understand their perspective, and imagine their reactions.
  8.  Be Initiating - Be the one to reach out and connect. Nothing brings more value to the world than connecting and making connections.
  9.  Be Persevering - "Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; Nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent." Calvin Coolidge

The practice of selflessness embodies the best of what it means to be part of humanity. We call it by other names such as "pay it forward" or "share the love." This practice is an investment. We are investing in others, and we are investing in ourselves. Selflessness brings the world a little bit closer.
